2nd grade Fall reflections

This week, 2nd grade started their Fall reflection paintings. These were created in just a few steps.
This project was inspired by,
Lauralee Chambers . You can check her work out on Instagram, if you click on her name.
Here's how we created ours.

First draw out "Y" trees on a folded piece of 90lb paper, with a brown oil pastel. My example got a little wrinkled and dirty this week!

Then, add paint! We used tempera cakes! These are our favorites!! The colors are so bright and vibrant!

After the students painted their trees with warm colors, they added a little bit of blue for the sky, and a strip of green for the ground. With the top half complete, the students were to really wet the bottom half of their paper. Don't be too scared to add enough water, or it won't work! You may have to blot the crease if you have excess water, but that's ok! It's better to have too much, than not enough!

Next class, when the paint is dry, we will add oil pastels to really make things pop! We'll add leaves, clouds, trunk reflections, and white lines on the bottom half to make it look more like water.

  4. Hi! This is a super cool project - thank you for sharing! Can you tell me if after they paint their tree tops and wet the paper, do they just fold the paper over to get the paint to transfer?
    Thanks much!

    1. Thank you! You're welcome! Yes, they do! Make sure they press down and rub really hard so that paint transfers to the other half! :)
