1st grade Laurel Burch Line Cats

Last week, 1st grade started on some super cute kitty cats! These little kitties are inspired by the art of Laurel Burch and the fabulous art teacher at Marshall Elementary
Here's Laurel Burch in front of her fabulous cat paintings. She painted all kinds of animals, and her art has been featured on items all over the world!
Can you tell now, where we're getting our inspiration from?
Here's how we created our own!
Materials:

Day 1: Discuss lines, and paint lines on 12x18 sheet of construction paper. I put the Crayola tempera paint, in my Sax paint trays, that have a lid. They're very handy!
They draw the lines with pencil first, then trace their lines with paint

Day 2: We had to spend finishing our lines, (which took longer than I thought!) so we haven't made it to cutting out the cat part yet. When we get that far, I'll give y'all an update!

Day 3: We started cutting out shapes today! I let them draw and cut their own things out, without using a tracer. So, if you want to save some time, you could use them! We just folded our papers, to make double of everything. The kids were surprisingly pretty good at it!
I led them in how to draw the top of their cat head, and went around to check to make sure we were all on the same page, before we cut. Then, I passed out the white and black paper, and let them choose their eye color. We folded the paper together, and drew out each shape, after I demonstrated how to draw it on the document camera.

Then add a mouth with a Sharpie and whiskers with black paper!
Depending on which way you did your lines (vertical or horizonal), you can do the top of the head this way too!
Awesome Art Mrs. Davidson's class!

Great job Mrs. Susong's class!

So proud of you, Mrs. Hartz' class!
