2nd grade Line and Shape Cactus

For the past couple of art visits, 2nd grade has been working on the elements of art, line, shape, and a little form, by creating these cacti!
Here's how we made them!
Materials:
Pencils, Sharpies
Scissors, glue

Day 1: Do a directed draw of a cactus. They drew theirs on green paper, and could make the arms however the wanted. We drew contour lines with a pencil, and then traced with the sharpie. We used a small folded up piece of white paper for the eyes, so you could cut out two eyes at once. We used a white pastel for the spikes. Then, we cut out the cactus. Before all this, I talked about line and pattern, and how to decorate your background. You could do this on day two, if you want to! I also showed them how to make their little pots to put their cactus in, and showed them how to shade the sides with a black or brown pastel.
(btw, I didn't have a single person finish in one 45 minute class)
After I posted this, I made y'all a video!

Day 2: Finish Cactus, background, pot...whatever you need to finish. Add some finishing touches like accessories, flowers, whatever! It's your cactus. We had some really creative cacti!
Here are some finished 2nd grade examples.
