3rd Grade Dot Paintings!

Last week, 3rd grade celebrated National Dot Day, by creating their own dot paintings! The Dot, is a book written by Peter Reynolds, and is about a young girl who's frustrated in art class, and says she can't draw. Her teacher says, "Make a dot, and see where it takes you." The student does, and realizes that she is capable of making great art, all she had to do was try! Here's how we create our own!

Day 1: Watched the book, "The Dot", on Youtube, and discussed the message this story is trying to convey. Then, I demonstrated how we are going to create our own "dots", and see where they take us! I showed them how to use Safe-T compass, and demonstrated how to create overlapping circles with it. After I created my circles, I showed them how to use q-tips and Big Kid's Choice paint brushes, to add lines, dots, designs, and color to their picture.

Day 2: Review some painting tips, remind them not to leave the negative space white behind the circles, and get to painting!

Here's some examples of our 3rd graders making their "mark" and they're off to a great start!
