Last week, 5th grade embarked on an EPIC project, that I've never tried before, but ever since I saw it on the SmART Class blog, I'v wanted to try it!
Here's an example from their website!
Btw, there's also a great tutorial on Art Room Britt's blog too!
Here's how we started ours!
Day 1: The kids can choose between a dog, cat, and bird of prey. We started on the eyes nose first. When I taught the first classs, I let them draw the eyes and noses themselves, but it was taking FOREVER, and they were a little too small. For the next class, I made a few tracers for the eyes, and nose, and that went much smoother! We drew them with pencil, traced them with black Jack Richeson Semi Moist paint, and then the next class filled in the irises with Crayola 28 pack oil pastels.
They're off to a great start!

So awesome! Any updates?
ReplyDeletethank you!! We've finished the eyes, noses, and collage papers! This project has been a bigger undertaking than I expected, haha! We're almost finished with our collage backgrounds, but we're taking a break to work on our Square 1 ART projects. We'll get back to work on them, after we're finished with those! Thanks for stopping by!! Stay tuned!! :)
DeleteWe had to do the same thing! We made the collage background and then paused to create chameleons for Art to Remember. We are finished with eyes and noses and are ready to glue on and create the faces. Any advice for how you did the markings on the collage background?
DeleteGlad we're not the only ones!! I'm not sure which marks you're talking about, so I'll talk about both! :D When we made our painted paper for the collage background, they marked it all up with oil pastel, and then we painted over that. For the muzzle part, we used white and black paint to paint a thin layer around the eyes, nose, and mouth. That was tricky! Our paper wasn't quite big enough to fit the whole muzzle! I just really studied Natalie's videos on her SmartClass blog post about it. We talked about adding jagged, wispy, furry like lines around the facial features. Hope this helps!! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteHi I am wondering where I can get the tracers from.
ReplyDeleteHi! I just made ours by folding a large piece of paper in half, drawing the different eyes on one side, and then I traced the eyes onto the opposite side, so they'd have the right angle. I just used a roll of tape, i think, to make the circles. they're probably about 5 inches across
DeleteHow many class periods did this take? And how long are your classes? Thanks!
