1st grade Royal Self Portraits

1st Grade Royal Self Portraits!

For the past few weeks, 1st grade has been working on these adorable royal self-portraits, inspired by the great Cassie Stephens

Here's how we created our own!

First we mixed and painted our own skin color (I passed out little togo ramekins with brown, peach, yellow, orange paint in them), and gold or silver for our crowns. We painted a 9x12 sheet of paper for the face, and then painted a smaller sheet for their crown.

The next class, I gave them an oval tracer, they drew the neck and shoulders, and we cut them out. I always get them to draw on the back of painted paper, so their mistakes will be on the white side that no one will see once we glue it down. After we glued them to our background, we draw our face with pencil and color the features with oil pastels.

We also decorated our background with oil pastels to add another pop of color. After they glued on the head, we drew the face step-by-step together, and colored them with oil pastels. The following class, we painted our hair and cut out clothes from the painted paper we made at the beginning of the year. We also painted our backgrounds, created our crowns, and decorated our clothes for the finishing touches.

I'm so proud of how they turned out :) Way to go, first grade!

Here are some of the best of the bunch!
