Kindergarten Symmetrical Monarch Butterflies

For the last couple weeks of school, Kindergarten has been working on their color mixing,  and their Monarch butterflies!
Here's how we made them!

Materials:
12x18 Sax 90 lb paper
Crayola and Sax Versa Temp Tempera paint (Red ,Yellow, and white)
Big Kid's Choice Paintbrushes
Q-tips
Black scraps from Matting artwork for NOTA

Day 1: We learned about Monarch butterflies, and then painted the outline of our own. I demonstrated how to fold your paper, make a 3 with the paint, and mix yellow and red together to make orange. I showed them how to stay inside the "bump bump" and mix the paint on ONE side with the paintbrush. Then, I demonstrated how to fold the paper, and squish the paint so it spreads to the other side. When I opened it, they were so amazed!
They went back to their tables, and then I went around squirting the paint. (They're not quite ready to squirt their own paint yet!!)
When they were finished painting, we watched some short Youtube videos on Monarch butterflies and drew our own.

Day 2: I showed them how to fold black paper I had left over from Night of the Arts, to make a body, and tear drop shaped details for the wings. They cut out their own butterflies, cut out their own bodies, and their own wing decorations. Then, they used white tempera paint and Q-tips to add dots to their butterfly.

I thought they turned out so cute!!
