Last week, our young artists had a blast creating these rocket-themed masterpieces while exploring line, pattern, and color blending! This project inspired by @Ms.tice_is_nice (Alyssa Tice), combines bold drawing with vibrant color s for a result that really pops.
✏️ What We Learned
Students focused on:
- Types of lines (zig-zag, curved, spiral, scalloped)
- Pattern and repetition
- Warm and cool colors
- What happens when the colors get wet and blend together
We talked about how lines can show movement and energy, just like a rocket zooming through space!
🎨 Materials
- White drawing paper
- Pencil
- Black Sharpie
- Markers
- Spray Bottle
- Black construction paper (for border)
- Oil pastels
Step-by-Step Process
Day 1: Drawing Our Rockets
- Students drew a simple rocket ship in the corner of their paper.
- From the rocket, they created large lines shooting across the page:
- Zig-zags
- Swirls
- Curvy/scalloped lines
- We traced everything with Sharpie to make it bold and stand out.
- Students traced each section using rainbow colored markers.
- Then they came to me, and I sprayed their papers!
Day 2: Starry Night Border
- We glued our artwork onto black construction paper.
- I taught them how to draw a star, and how to practice on the back of their paper.
- Using white crayon or oil pastel, students added stars all around the border.
- This created a glowing “outer space” effect to frame their work!
(I recommend Crayola Non Washable markers. We tried Mr. Sketch, and they didn't bleed or blend. )

(CraZart bleeds well, and these are washable!)
Here are some cute First grade examples!
