The Great American Eclipse was such an amazing sight, Mrs. Stacey was inspired to create these works of art with her 4th graders! Here's how we created ours!
Materials needed: 9x12 Sax 90lb drawing paper, Ticonderoga pencils, Sharpie markers, Crayola oil pastels, and Prang watercolors (black and blue)
Day 1: We discussed the eclipse that just took place, we looked at Mexican art examples of suns & moons, and then I demonstrated how to draw this out. We used large circle to trace our out line, drew the line between the sun and moon next, added facial features, then added designs in the background. After their drawing was complete, we traced it with Sharpie markers.
Day 2: Adding color! This class period, I demonstrated how to use the oil pastels to blend their colors to add VALUE to their picture! I explain the importance of VALUE and how adding shading to your art really takes it to a whole new level! We also discussed COOL and WARM colors, and how to blend those together to really make them look good together. We started with the darkest colors on the outside, and worked our way in. We started with purple on the moon, then blue, then white to blend them together. On the sun, we started with red, then went to orange, and used yellow to blend them together. I then demonstrated what happens when you color your objects in the background, and paint over them. They still show, if you color dark enough!
Day 3: Finish coloring, and paint the background with black and blue.
