1st Grade Van Gogh Sunflowers

First grade has been working on their Van Gogh sunflowers for a couple of weeks now. This is a challenging lesson for them, but they're doing well! We're getting our inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh's painting, Fourteen Sunflowers 1888.

Day 1

We drew our vase, flowers, and line for the table. Then, they traced with a sharpie, and colored with oil pastels. We talked about blending in our petals and our vase. They colored with orange first, and then colored with yellow to blend the two colors together. We used Crayola oil pastels for this step. I also demonstrated how to color their vase horizontally, leave a little white in the middle, and blend the colors together with a white pastel.
Day 2: Finish coloring, and then they can paint their background with tempera paint.
Here are some of the beautiful finished pieces!
