1st grade Basket of Apples

The past couple of weeks, 1st grade has been working on their basket of apples project! This has quite a few steps for these littles, but they've been doing well!

Here's what we used in this project.
2 9x12" 90lb paper for the apples and background
(or construction paper for the background)
little apple tracers
pencils, black crayons, white pastels, construction paper crayons
tempera cakes
4x6 brown paper

Day 1: I demonstrated how to trace the apples, and how to do it so they'll fit on the paper. After, they trace them with a pencil, they traced them with a black crayon, and then they could paint. Kids love painting y'all!!! We talked about how to not use a ton of paint, but they're just 6 year olds, so they tend to use a little much! That's ok though! After I told them to wet their apples with clean water first, that went a bit better. Anywho... today's goal is to get your apples drawn, traced, and painted. If you get done early with your apples, you can start on your background. Some classes painted their backgrounds, and others made them out of construction paper. (I think my personal favorite, is the construction paper one) They of course want to do the painted one! That adds another day though ;(
(I tell them it's ok if you get outside of the lines because we're going to cut them out)

Day 2: I demonstrate how to cut your apples out, how to draw out the basket, and how to create your background. That's where it gets a little tricky! That's a lot of steps for these guys and girls. I also talk about adding highlights and shadows. Some got to that step, others didn't. Like I said, it's a lot to fit in one class!
Here's a few that did a really great job though!
