5th grade Square 1 Art

5th Grade Square 1 Art Project 🎨

Our 5th graders have been hard at work creating beautiful artwork for our Square 1 Art fundraiser! This year, students were given the freedom to choose their favorite animal or object as the subject of their art.

On Day 1, they brought in their computers to search for inspiration—whether it was images of animals, favorite objects, or step-by-step “how to draw” tutorials. They sketched out their ideas and got started on their drawings.

On Day 2, students carefully traced their designs with black Sharpie markers and added color using pastels, colored pencils, or paint.

On Day 3, they focused on finishing touches, making sure their art was bold, bright, and ready to shine!

Materials

To create their masterpieces, students used:

We’ll be mailing the artwork to Square 1 Art in mid-October. Families will receive free stickers of their child’s art, along with a catalog to order custom products, in November, just in time for Christmas. This year, Square 1 is offering free shipping on every order!

Not only will families get to enjoy these keepsakes, but every purchase also helps buy art supplies for over 800 students in our school. Thank you for supporting our young artists and helping keep creativity alive in the classroom!

Fabulous Fall Elementary Art Lessons!

Hi! Glad you're here! Here's a list of the fall themed elementary art projects we've done throughout the years! Hope this helps, having them all in one place! Just click on the pictures or titles below, and they'll take you to the original post.

3rd grade Square 1 Art Tigers

3rd Grade Square 1 Art – Tigers in the Jungle 🐯🌿

Our 3rd graders are working hard on their Square 1 Art fundraiser, and this year they are creating bold and beautiful tiger portraits!

We started last week by sketching out our tigers in pencil, and following along with me and my "How to draw a tiger" video, on my Youtube channel.

Once the drawings were ready, we traced over them carefully with black markers to make the details stand out. This week, students are bringing their tigers to life with bright oil pastels and paint. The pops of orange, green, blue, and pink make the artwork jump right off the page!

Here's our favorite supplies that we used!  Circle tracersPencils, Permanent markers, Oil pastels, and watercolor paint or tempera paint. #amazonassociatelinks

Each tiger is full of personality, and the students are so proud of their work. We can’t wait to see these wild and colorful creations turned into keepsakes for families through the Square 1 Art fundraiser.

2nd grade Square 1 art Cardinals

Our 2nd graders have been hard at work creating these beautiful winter cardinals for our Square 1 Art fundraiser! This project took two days to complete and was such a fun way to combine drawing, painting, and mixed media.

Students started by sketching their cardinal in pencil, then outlined their work with sharpie markers. Next, they added details with oil pastels before finishing with bright tempera paint backgrounds to make their birds pop.

The results are stunning—each student created a unique and colorful winter scene! Best of all, the fundraiser helps us purchase new art supplies so our young artists can keep exploring and creating all year long.

We’re so proud of their hard work and can’t wait to see their art come to life on keepsakes for families!

Here's how we made them!

Monarchs and Marigolds 4th Square 1 Art

Last week, 4th grade started their Monarchs and Marigolds lesson, for their Square 1 art. We watched a short video on the migration of Monarchs to Mexico, and learned a little bit about Dia de los Muertos

I then showed them a quick clip of the Monarch butterflies we saw on our farm in Tennessee, a couple of weeks ago. I read this generation of butterflies will be the ones who make the trek to Mexico! I read they fly between 1,200 and 3,000 miles on that journey! That's incredible!

Then, they drew along with me and Art for Kids Hub and made their own Monarch butterfly by drawing with a pencil, tracing with a sharpie, and painting the wings. We're going to add the marigolds in the background the same way, but color them with oil pastels.

Materials used:

Pencils, Sharpie markers, oil pastels, watercolors, brushes, cups

Here's our progress so far!

Square 1 Art!

Square 1 Art Fundraiser is Back! 🎨✨

This week in the art room, our students began working on their Square 1 Art projects! Each child is creating a special piece of artwork that will be turned into keepsakes for families to enjoy. From mugs and ornaments to tote bags and stickers, there are so many fun products available—perfect for gifts or for cherishing your child’s creativity at home.

The best part? All products will ship for FREE, just in time for Christmas! 🎁 That means families can order unique, personalized holiday gifts while also supporting our school.

Why does this fundraiser matter?
Our school serves over 800 students, and every single one of them benefits from a fully stocked art room. The money raised through Square 1 Art goes directly toward buying essential art supplies—paper, paints, brushes, markers, oil pastels and more—so that every student has the tools they need to express themselves creatively.

We can’t wait to see all of the incredible artwork your children are creating. Be on the lookout for order forms and online access codes coming home in November!

Thank you for supporting the arts at our school and helping to keep creativity alive for every student. 💛

Here’s what we’re working on!

Monochromatic Self Portraits

This year, I wanted to make a collaborative piece of art, to kick off the new year. I also wanted to create something that wasn't too tricky for the kids, while we got back into the swing of things and went over expectations and procedures in the art room, as well.

We got our inspiration from a few talented art teachers and students. Here's some great blogs you can get inspiration from too!

2nd grade cardboard castle prints

This week in art class, our amazing 2nd graders studied the colorful, geometric work of Swiss-German artist Paul Klee— especially his painting “Castle and Sun.” Klee loved using shapes, color, and imagination to build dreamy cities and abstract scenes.

Take a look at his original masterpiece below:

Sweet Treats & Bold Colors: Wayne Thiebaud-Inspired Ice Cream Art

This week in our elementary art room, we dove into the colorful world of Wayne Thiebaud, an American artist known for his whimsical, dessert-themed paintings full of rich color, bold shadows, and delicious detail. Our young artists created their own vibrant ice cream cone drawings using oil pastels on black construction paper, and the results are as sweet as the inspiration!

This lesson came from the fabulous art teacher Joel Scholten! You can download his ice cream templates here!

4th grade Yayoi Kusama Pumkin Collage

This fall, 4th grade created some Yayoi Kusama inspired pumpkin collages!

I taught this to 4th grade, and then dressed up as Yayoi Kusama for storybook character day. It was fun seeing the 4th graders light up and recognize who I was when I walked through the halls, that day!

We studied the art of Kusama, learned about her career and life from this Tate Museum video.

Here's what supplies you need

Then I demonstrated how to create our own!

5th grade Ring Pops

5th grade created these ring pops a couple of years ago, and it's been a staple for them in my curriculum, ever since! I got the idea from Katie Gray (@howgraythouart) on Instagram, and knew my students would enjoy this one! Let me tell you, they sure did! It' doesn't take a lot of complicated things either, so I was able to do it in my portable (that didn't have a sink for two years)
Here's what supplies we used!

I'm also going to get them ring pops while they work!

Here's a video showing each step, if you want to follow along with us!
