1st grade Woven Winter houses

First grade is learning about weaving and is starting their woven winter house, this week! We started by talking about weaving, showing examples of weaving, and discussing the importance of this art form. We also discussed all the different materials you could weave, like thread, fabric, straw, wood, plastic, etc. I told them we were going to start with the basics and weave some paper! ;)

Day 1: Discuss weaving, show them how, and get their backgrounds painted. We're wishing for a white Christmas, so we're creating a snowy background. We started out with 9x12 blue paper (they could pick from the different blues I have) and white tempera paint on a plate. Before I passed any materials out, I demonstrated how to paint the bottom of the page, using a lot of paint, to make the ground. Then, after the finish the ground they can paint clouds in the sky. Once they're done with the white paint, I'll pass out the tempera cakes and they can paint the evergreen trees in the background. I show them how to create the evergreen trees using a triangle, and slanted brushstrokes. If they finish painting their backgrounds, they can work on their house. This usually takes the rest of our 45 minute class.

Sweet 1st grader Assyria, modeling how to cut your loom!
Make sure you cut on the folded line!
I get them to cut it with me, so we all cut on the folded line
I get the students to chant with me, "Cut almost to the top, and STOP!"

Day 2: Work on the house. Review how to weave, and create our woven houses. We will add details like windows, shutters, doors, other trees, the roof, chimney, snow, etc. We'll glue all that to our background, et voila! We have our woven winter houses!

Stay tuned for some awesome art!
