2nd grade Pablo Picasso Portraits

Last week, 2nd grade started their Pablo Picasso portrait lesson! We learned about his life and art, and the art movement, Cubism. I was inspired by The Artsy Art Room, and wanted to create something similar with our students! Btw, we're still on a cart!! No news as to when the portable will be ready yet!

Here's how we created ours!
Materials:

Day 1: Watch slide show about Pablo Picasso, and learn about his life and works. After the slideshow, I demonstrated how to draw the face, eyes, nose, and mouth. We just finished a self portrait lesson, so they did well, drawing the initial face shape. If they wanted, they could make their face a different shape than an oval. They could do a square, diamond, heart, circle...whatever they could come up with!
While they were drawing the face, I passed out 3 scraps of paper for them to put their eyes and nose on.
They drew everything with pencil, colored it in with oil pastel, and lastly, traced with a black oil pastel. I saved that step for last because their papers would get all smudgy and dirty if I didn't! (I learned this the hard way!) They glued on their facial features before they colored their faces with oil pastels. If they didn't, the eyes and nose wouldn't stick! A few finished in one day, it took most longer.
Here's some cool examples form Mrs. Hubbard's class!
