3rd grade
Fall Printmaking Collage
Third grade has been working on a new project, inspired by the artist
and art teacher Cassie Stephens, that involves a few different types of media.
They created their leaves by printmaking with markers, and created their background by using liquid watercolors, salt, and oil pastels. Here's how we created ours!

Day 1: We started by creating a
foam printing plate of our leaf. The students observed real leaves, and drew
out their leaf after closely examining it on a piece of paper that was the same size as our foam printing plate. Then, we took our leaves that we had drawn on paper, placed them on top of the foam, and re-traced our drawing so it would appear on the foam underneath. After we made the leaf imprint on the foam, we went back and traced our drawing without the paper, and added veins to the foam. You have to make sure and trace these drawings multiple times with a dull pencil, for the designs to really show up when you print.
Day 2:We used markers to "ink" up our leaves, and then printed them onto damp paper. After they were done printing, they created their backgrounds by using white oil pastels t,o draw swirls, and liquid watercolors to paint. Lastly, I added salt to their papers before they went in the drying rack, to add an interesting texture.
Day 3: We cut out our leaves, and glued them to our background!
